Alzheimer's Treatments
What are my treatment options?

There are 2 classes of medications approved for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Both of these classes of medication affect chemicals that help brain cells communicate, particularly those involved and memory and learning. These medications may also be effective for other types of dementia.

Other medications help behavioral symptoms that may develop later in the course of the disease.

A number of behavioral strategies and adjustments in living situations are also useful for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias.

Vascular dementia may occur separately, or exacerbate Alzheimer’s dementia. Treatment of risk factors such as high blood pressure, cholesterol abnormalities, diabetes, obesity, and tobacco use is important.

Other Treatment Strategies

Given the direct correlation between the brain and the body, it is important to address a variety of medical conditions within the course of treatment. Comprehensive treatment of Alzheimer’s disease goes beyond the brain to address several body systems, including the endocrine and immune systems that are involved in optimal brain function.

Identification of conditions that may contribute to cognitive decline, allows treatment to improve overall brain and body health. Treating an underlying medical condition may improve symptoms by restoring balance to the brain and body systems.
